Professor Baniyas earned his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Wales, Cardiff, in 1993. He holds clinical qualifications including Board Certification from the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology, the American College of Forensic Examiners, the American Academy of Pain Management, and the American Psychotherapy Association. Professor Baniyas is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, the American College of Forensic Examiners, the Royal Society for Public Health, and the American Psychotherapy Association. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine. Currently, Professor Baniyas serves as the Higher Education Advisor and Director of the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), as well as the Director of the National Qualification Center (NQC) at the Ministry of Education, UAE. He holds a professorial rank at the College of Medicine, UAE University (UAEU), and is a Consultant Clinical Toxicologist at the Emergency Medicine Department of Tawam Hospital, SEHA.
Throughout his career, Professor Baniyas has held several senior leadership roles in higher education and health sectors, including Dean of the College of Medicine and Provost (Chief Academic Officer) at UAEU. He has also served as Vice Chancellor at the Emirates College for Advanced Education (ECAE), Academic Advisor at the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research, and Executive Director for Higher Education at the Department of Education & Knowledge (ADEK) in Abu Dhabi. Professor Baniyas has been a member of the Board of Trustees for Mohamed V University, Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), the Marriage Fund, the Federal Health Authority, the UAEU Council, the Arabian Gulf University, and the National Institute of Health Specialties, where he is the founding Chair.
His major committee memberships include the Drug Registration, Pharmacovigilance and Drug Safety Committee, and the Medical Certificates Evaluation & Certificates Equalization Committee. He has played a significant role in accrediting Medicine and Pharmacy Colleges and has served as an External Examiner and Evaluator for various Higher Education Institutions. Professor Baniyas has lectured extensively on topics such as poisoning, chemical, biological, and radiological warfare agents, medication safety, and the pharmacotherapy of diseases including epilepsy, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. He has received numerous awards and grants, supervised many PhD students, and published over 100 papers and conference abstracts in neuroscience, toxicology, community health, and education. Additionally, he has served as an editor and reviewer for various medical and pharmaceutical journals.
