Keynote Address:
All the World is a Stage: Global Challenges, Regional Disruptions and the Future of Higher Education
Dr. Javier Cevallos, President, American Academic Leadership Institute, USA
Demographic shifts, changing labor market expectations, evolving definitions of institutional quality, artificial intelligence (AI) and political interference are significantly changing the landscape of higher education. Declining student populations across Europe and North America have resulted in enrollment challenges and the closure or consolidation of colleges and universities in the United States. In contrast, Africa is experiencing unprecedented demographic growth, creating significant demand for expanded access to quality higher education. This imbalance creates opportunities for new institutional models, cross-border partnerships, and innovative providers. AI presents both an opportunity and a challenge for higher education. It is the AI Paradox: while institutions are rapidly expanding programs that teach AI-related knowledge and skills, only a few have developed policies for the integration of AI into teaching, learning, and outcomes assessment. At the same time, increasing pressure to demonstrate the economic value of higher education has led governments, employers, and students to evaluate institutions through graduate earnings and employment outcomes. Although these metrics offer useful indicators of success, they risk narrowing the broader educational mission and require quality assurance systems that balance workforce relevance with intellectual, civic, and social development. Higher education has historically been able to adapt to many challenges. By embracing change while maintaining academic quality and equity, higher education will continue to play a vital role in advancing knowledge and preparing future generations to contribute to society.
